Food Sovereignty & Farmer Protests: Where to now?

Saturday, April 27, 2024 - 09:30 to 17:00
Rocque Lab, Rhetoric House, South Campus, Maynooth University

As part of Maynooth's Food Sovereignty Festival, this one day event will contribute to the ongoing work of food sovereignty movements on the island of Ireland, supported by the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute and MU Department of Geography.

This event takes place in the context of widespread farmer protests across Europe and the rise of reactionary farmer-rural movements and political organisations, including in Ireland. How should food sovereignty movements respond? How can effective alliances be constructed in and beyond alternative food movements and with whom? What are potential sites of intervention and what strategies do we have for intervening in them?

The event has three main aims: to bring farmers, researchers, organisers and activists together to build on existing relationships and foster new ones; to sharpen our collective understanding and analysis of the rise of reactionary farmer-rural movements; and to identity concrete ways in which we can work together to construct an alternative, progressive vision of food and land politics on the island.

Participants: Talamh Beo, Landworker's Alliance, Root & Branch Collective, Cloughjordan Community Farm, Cultivate, Rupture, Afri.

Registration is now at capacity, if you would like to be added to a waiting list, please contact Dr. Patrick Bresnihan by email here
