Graham Kay the inaugural Ken Saro-Wiwa Postgraduate Award

On Tuesday 10 November, Graham Kay, a PhD student attached to the Centre and based in the Department of History, was awarded the inaugural Ken Saro-Wiwa Postgraduate Award. Presented by Saro-Wiwa's daughter Noo, an award-winning writer, the €2,000 award will support Graham's PhD research on the role of Oil in Anglo-German geopolitical competition in the lead-up to the First World War. Graham's work is being undertaken under the supervision of Professor Filipe Meneses De Ribero. Congratulations to graham who will use the award to conduct field research in Germany. Professor John O' Brennan participated in a workshop with other Jean Monnet chairs, on the future of European security and EU Enlargement policy at Jagiellonian University, Krakow on 17 November 2023. He also spoke to Euronews about Ukraine's prospects of joining the EU and how enlargement policy is likely to evolve in the years to come.

Professor John O' Brennan published a new piece in The Irish Examiner newspaper on 27 November 2023, arguing that the far right constitutes a real threat to European democracy in the 2024 European Parliament elections, and that there are too many people across Europe who are very complacent about the nature of this threat.

Ukranian War and associated Events in Maynooth University

Since the outbreak of Russia’s War on Ukraine on February 24, 2022, members of the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies have played a key role in contributing to the University’s response to the invasion and commenting on its implications.
