IACES Biennial Conference 2019

Members of the Centre were active participants in the biannual conference of the Irish Association for Contemporary European Studies (IACES) at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, on Friday, 29 November 2019. The conference speakers included Professor Ben Rosamond (Copenhagen University), Judy Dempsey (Carnegie Europe), Bill Emmott (former editor, The Economist), and Dr. Mary C. Murphy (UCC). The main themes included the future of the European Union and Ireland's place within EU structures post-Brexit. a large number of Maynooth University students attended the event.

John O' Brennan acted as co-host of the conference and delivered a paper on EU Rule of law issues in Central and Eastern Europe. He argued that the abasement of the rule of law constitutes the most serious crisis the European Union is now facing. Other speakers included Professor Georgi Dimitrov (Sofia University), Professor Dagmar Schiek (Queen's University Belfast) and Professor Federico Fabbrini (DCU).
