Biography

Rinne Anna Ní Ghallachair bunchéim sa Fhraincis agus sa Ghearmáinis in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh agus iarchéimeanna sa Fhraincis in Ollscoil Bhrest agus Ollscoil Rennes na Fraince. I ndiaidh di deich mbliana a chaitheamh mar léachtóir le Fraincis, Gearmáinis agus Gaeilge in Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Leitir Ceanainn agus os cionn 20 bliain mar Stiúrthóir ar Ionad na dTeangacha in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad, tá sí anois ag obair mar Stiúrthóir ar Lárionad na Gaeilge: Taighde, Teagasc agus Tástáil agus mar Cheann ar Scoil an Léinn Cheiltigh san ollscoil chéanna. Díríonn a cuid taighde ar an ilteangachas, ar theagasc agus ar fhoghlaim na Gaeilge agus ar litríocht na Briotáine. Bhí sí ina comhalta ar Choimisiún na Gaeltachta (2000-2002), ar an ghrúpa oibre do pholasaí teanga sa Roinn Oideachais agus Scileanna (2008-9), ina Cathaoirleach ar Chumann na Teangeolaíochta Feidhmí (2004-2007), ar Chomhairle Raidió na Gaeltachta (2010-2013) agus ar Údarás na Gaeltachta (2012-2017). Athcheapadh mar Chathaoirleach ar an Údarás í in Eanáir 2018.   Ina theannta sin tá tréimhsí caite aici mar chomhalta ar choistí eile in Éirinn agus thar lear a bhí dírithe ar theagasc agus ar chur chun cinn na dteangacha. Faoi láthair, tá sin ina comhalta ar choiste feidhmiúcháin an Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE), ar choiste na dTeangacha, na Litríochta, an Chultúir agus na Cumarsáide in Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann, agus ar choiste le Coimisiún na hEorpa atá ag plé leis an ilteangachas. Sa bhliain 2008 bhronn Rialtas na Fraince gradam uirthi as a cuid oibre i dtreo an deisteangachais.

Anne Gallagher is Head of the School of Celtic Studies and Director of the Centre for Irish Language Research, Teaching and Testing at Maynooth University. She is a member of the executive committee of the Association of Languages Testers in Europe (ALTE), of the Indicator Expert Group on Multilingualism at the European Commission and of the Royal Irish Academy’s Languages, Literature, Culture and Communication Committee. She is a former chairperson of the Irish Association for Applied Linguistics and Raidió na Gaeltachta and was reappointed chairperson of Údarás na Gaeltachta in January 2018 for a second five-year term. She has also served on a number of committees in Ireland and abroad focusing on the teaching and promotion of languages   In 2008 she was made Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques by the French Government in recognition of her services to plurilingualism.
