Professor Tobias Lock of Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology was interviewed by Euronews about the Court of Justice’s ruling in the case of Graham Dwyer. The Court held that the indiscriminate retention of communication data – such as mobile phone data, internet data – provided for by Irish law was incompatible with EU law, notably the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights. Prof Lock explained the Court of Justice’s thinking behind the ruling and its possible consequences.

Tobias’ research and teaching interests are in European law and human rights law. In 2020 he was awarded a Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law and Fundamental Rights through the European Union's Erasmus+ programme.
