New MU partnership for Irish-language performing arts

The Department of Modern Irish, Maynooth University and An tOireachtas, announced today (20 May 2021) details of their new strategic partnership and the launch of a new MA stream in Irish-language Performing Arts and Oral Traditions at Maynooth University which features a particularly innovative approach to the study and development Irish-language and Gaeltacht-based art forms.
 
Professor of Modern Irish and Performing Arts in Maynooth University, Tríona Ní Shíocháin, said: “We are delighted to enter into this significant new partnership with Oireachtas na Gaeilge which is the leading advocate for Traditional and Irish-language based Performing Arts in Ireland. The practical experience and specialist knowledge offered by the partnership, combined with new academic and creative modules, will offer students an enriching experience while acquiring transferable skills and an exciting opportunity to specialise in creative practices through the medium of Irish.”
 
Commenting on the partnership, Professor Fionntán de Brún, Head of Celtic Studies, Maynooth University said: ‘An tOireachtas has long been the resounding authentic heartbeat of Irish-language based performing arts and culture in Ireland.  The national Oireachtas festival has become a thriving, exhilarating gathering, catering for thousands of festivalgoers annually.  It is a contemporary event rooted in our rich linguistic and artistic traditions and heritage.  We are proud to engage in this new partnership which will afford our postgraduate students a rich and rewarding learning experience.’
 
Speaking on behalf of An tOireachtas, Máirín Nic Dhonnchadha stated: ‘This new addition to the post-graduate programme being introduced by Maynooth University is a wonderfully progressive and innovate course and we are extremely honoured to be part of it.  The modules on Irish-language-based performing arts and the creation of new works promise to be a richly engaging, enlightening experience for students and we look forward to seeing new opportunities for people interested in pursuing a career in this sector.  The collaboration with Professor Ní Shíocháin and Professor de Brún of Maynooth University has been a valuable and uplifting process which signals a brighter future for the arts.’

Comhpháirtíocht úr idir An tOireachtas & Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge, Ollscoil Mhá Nuad

D’fhógair Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge, Ollscoil Mhá Nuad agus An tOireachtas, inniu (20 Bealtaine 2021) go bhfuil comhpháirtíocht straitéiseach úrnua bunaithe acu chun taibhealaíona agus traidisiúin bhéil na Gaeilge agus na Gaeltachta a fhorbairt agus a chur chun cinn. Is cuid lárnach í an chomhpháirtíocht seo d’fhorbairtí nua sna healaíona Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta atá á gcur chun cinn ag Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge, Ollscoil Mhá Nuad, ag leibhéal iarchéime.

Labhair an tOllamh le Nua-Ghaeilge agus le Taibhealaíona in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad, Tríona Ní Shíocháin faoin bhforbairt: “Tá an-lúcháir orainn an chomhpháirtíocht nua seo a bheith ar bun le hOireachtas na Gaeilge, atá ar cheann de na heagrais ealaíon is mó agus is tábhachtaí in Éirinn. Tá saineolas ag an Oireachtas ar gach gné de chultúr na n-ealaíon Gaeilge agus an riarachán a bhaineann leo; ar fhorbairt físe chun iad a chur chun cinn; agus chun pobal uile na Gaeilge a nascadh le chéile, a spreagadh agus a chothú. Gheobhaidh na mic léinn a thabharfaidh faoin gcúrsa seo taithí phraiticiúil an-luachmhar agus anuas air sin, beidh an deis acu páirt ghníomhach a ghlacadh sna healaíona Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta mar chuid den taighde agus mar chuid de na modúil nua a chuirfear ar fáil.”

Dúirt an tOllamh Fionntán de Brún, Ceann Scoil an Léinn Cheiltigh in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad: ‘Is geall le ball beatha de chuid na Gaeilge é Oireachtas na Gaeilge, féile bheo chomhaimseartha ina mbíonn na mílte rannpháirteach agus a bhfuil traidisiún fada saibhir ar a cúl. Is cúis bhróid againn in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad an chomhpháirtíocht nua seo a thabharfaidh deis do mhic léinn na Máistreachta na healaíona dúchais a shaothrú agus a shaibhriú.’

Dúirt Leas-Stiúrthóir an Oireachtais, Máirín Nic Dhonnchadha: “Céim cheannródaíoch chun cinn do na taibhealaíona is ea an sruth nua san MA Nua-Ghaeilge, Taibhealaíona agus Traidisiúin Bhéil na Gaeilge, atá bunaithe ag Ollscoil Mhá Nuad. Fáiltímid roimh an ardú stádais a thabharfaidh sé do na taibhealaíona teangabhunaithe, ach go háirithe, agus roimh na deiseanna luachmhara a bheidh ar fáil do phobail cleachtais na dtaibhealaíon dá bharr. Is uchtach agus ardú meanman don Oireachtas a bheith rannpháirteach sna forbairtí atá á stiúradh ag an Ollamh Tríona Ní Shíocháin agus ag an Ollamh Fionntán de Brún.”
