At an event in Maynooth University this week, Seán Kyne, Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, announced funding of €532,000 for Lárionad na Gaeilge, Maynooth University, to run Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge (TEG) examinations over the next three years.

Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge (TEG) provides a series of general Irish language proficiency examinations and qualifications for adult learners of Irish. In addition, the examinations are used by colleges of education as part of the entry criteria for the Professional Master of Education, and by public sector bodies as an independent validation of staff language proficiency.

TEG examinations are offered at five different levels and 1,790 people registered for the examinations in 2018-19, a 129% increase on 2017-18. The examinations were run in various centres throughout Ireland in that period and also in centres abroad, including Paris, Washington and Los Angeles.

Speaking at the event, TEG Director, Siuán Ní Mhaonaigh, said that the staff of Lárionad na Gaeilge are very grateful to the Minister and to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht for their continued support. “This funding will allow us to build on what has been achieved so far and to ensure that we can cater for Irish language learners both at home and abroad, as well as teachers and employers. It doesn’t matter what level a learner has in the language, he or she will get clear direction and valuable resources from this system.”

During the event, Minister Kyne also presented TEG certificates to learners who successfully attained the qualification recently, including members of Maynooth University staff and students from various different universities.
