STOPFARRIGHT Seminar Series: 4 Far Right and Racism in Ireland

STOPFARRIGHT is an Irish Research Council funded project, led by Barry Cannon of the Department of Sociology at Maynooth University, in association with the Crosscare Migrant Project. The project aims to promote discussion and debate between academics and civil society groups on how best to counter-strategise against the growth of the far right in Ireland. As part of its activities, STOPFARRIGHT is holding a series of online seminars with leading Irish and International academics and civil society members working on the theme of resisting the Far Right. This is the fourth in a series of webinars held as part of this project. 

This seminar will examine theory and practice about the far right from leading academics in Ireland.

Speaker profiles 

Bryan Fanning is Professor of Migration and Social Policy at University College Dublin. He describes himself as an, ‘academic who studies migration and social policy against the background noise, amplified on the internet, of xenophobic anxiety and political nativism, promoted by some politicians who claim that walls and not bridges will bring us security, stability and prosperity.’ His research interests also include the modernisation of Irish society, with a focus on the history of ideas and debates that have shaped its development. He has published extensively on these topics. His latest book, ‘Three Roads to the Welfare State Liberalism, Social Democracy and Christian Democracy’ was recently published by Policy Press.
Rhona McCord is a socialist, trade unionist, historian and a committed anti-racist and anti-fascist organiser. She currently works for Unite the Union in Research, Communications and Community Development.  She is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and she has been involved in politics and activism since she was a teenager. She has been involved in many campaigns including Right 2 Water and Repeal.  She is currently running Unite’s Unity Over Division campaign in Rep of Ireland linking in with communities at the grassroots level to build respect for inclusion, equality and diversity.
Gavan Titley is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Media Studies, Maynooth University, and a Docent in the Swedish School of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki. His books include Is Free Speech Racist? (Polity 2020), Racism and Media (Sage 2019), After Charlie Hebdo: Terror, Racism, Free Speech (ed., Zed Books, 2017) and The Crises of Multiculturalism: Racism in a Neoliberal Age (with Alana Lentin, Zed Books 2011)
Moderator: Pranav Kohli is Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Maynooth University. He is a political anthropologist specialising in race, gender, conflict, authoritarianism and memory with an abiding interest in their intersections with the politics of health. He recently completed his PhD in Anthropology from Maynooth University (2021) on the topic, ‘Memory, Theodicy and Victimhood: The Afterlife of the Partition of India’.
