Thursday, July 15, 2021 - 10:00

On 15 July, Dr. Ciara Bracken-Roche will be presenting her work on drone technologies at the International Political Science Association's Annual Conference. The panel is entitled ‘Governing Technologies in the 21st Century, Competing Actors, Discourses and Practices’, and includes a set of papers which explore multiple and interlinked governance challenges in booming technological sectors. Based on Practical Theory and Science and Technology Studies perspectives and concepts, the panel raises a series of questions regarding the main issues of governing technologies. How do major powers in North America, Asia and Europe deal with these matters and how do their approaches differ or converge? What are the main priorities and for which objectives? Dr. Bracken-Roche will talk about the evolution of civil drone technologies in Canada on this all-woman panel, featuring Dr. Inga Ulnicane (De Montfort University, UK), Dr. Raluca Csernatoni (IES, Brussels), Dr. Chantal Lavallée (RMCSJ, Canada), and Dr. Marijn Hoijtink (UvA, the Netherlands).

Dr. Ciara Bracken-Roche is an Assistant Professor of Criminology in the Department of Law at Maynooth University, Ciara's current research project explores the adoption and use of drone technologies in Canada and Ireland with a specific focus on their application by policing and public safety agencies. The project will create new knowledge about the relationship between police use of these technologies/techniques of governance and existing legal, social and technological norms.
