Ancient Greek

Why study Ancient Greek

Ancient Greek may be studied in its own right as part of a Double Major degree, and may be taken along with another subject to degree level. In this programme you will study the ancient Greek language, and will also be encouraged to read widely in the literature and culture of ancient Greece.
In first year the emphasis is on language acquisition, which means that in second and third year you will be able to read, in the original language, classical texts by literary giants such as Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato and Homer. As well as providing fascinating views of ancient civilization, these are authors whose works were fundamental to the development of European culture.
The focus throughout the course is therefore not only on the language but on acquiring critical skills and a broader knowledge of the ancient Greek world, its literature, schools of thought and ways of life. This course is intended for beginners, and no previous knowledge of the subject is required.
