Eddie Kelly, research masters student working in quantum computing under supervision of Professor Jiri Vala, has recently attended a by-invitation-only ‘hackathon’ event organized by Horizon Quantum Computing in Bali, Indonesia, for a week at the end of November 2023. The company’s C.E.O, Dr. Joe Fitzsimmons, who is a graduate of the Department of Theoretical Physics at Maynooth University, invited Eddie to join a group of about forty postgraduate students to learn, test and experiment with the quantum software Triple Alpha. This software package was developed by Horizon Quantum Computing to enable users to easily program quantum computers. Eddie’s team focused on an algorithm for Average Circuit Eigenvalue Sampling. The trip was once in a lifetime opportunity to meet and work with other researchers in quantum computing amongst the mesmerising tropical backdrop.
