Research Interests
Fungi play an important role as integral part of our ecosystem. They are source of food as raw material as well as fermentation products and enzymes. Furthermore, they produce bioactive secondary metabolites including food contaminating mycotoxins (e.g. aflatoxin, sterigmatocystin, fumonisins), antibiotics (e.g. penicillin, cephalosporin) and many other pharmaceuticals have great impact on human activities on earth. Our research focuses on detrimental and beneficial features of fungi. We try to prevent detrimental features of fungi such as mycotoxin production and contaminating food sources while we try to enhance beneficial features such as enzyme production, pollutant degradation using our expertise of molecular biology and fungal physiology. We have been working with a number of fungal organisms including model filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, opportunistic human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus, plant pathogen and aflaxotin producer Aspergillus flavus, model organism Neurospora crass, model system yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In addition to these filamentous fungi and yeast, we have also established expertise for mushrooms to cultivate these organisms for enzyme and biomass production.
Our research has got more than 5,250 citations according to the Google Scholar, and many of our papers are available as open access and in platforms like Researchgate. We have been collaborating with leading researchers from countries, Macau, Brazil, USA, Austria, Germany, Japan and Korea. We are expert in discovering protein complexes that regulate fungal secondary metabolite production. We have published landmark papers in regulation of mycotoxins. Transcriptional regulatory complexes, velvet complex (Science) (Genetics), Epigenetic Methyltransferase Complex, (Developmental Cell), COP9 complex (PNAS), the MAPK complex, the STRIPAK complex, F-box proteins and SCF complexes (PLoS Genetics), Fbx15 complex (PLoS Pathogens) the chromatin binding KERS complex (Nucleic Acids Research), Gliotoxin regulatory complex (Nature Communications) are few to name.
Our papers have been highlighted by a variety of national as well as international science and technology news agencies including Science News (USA), Irish Times (Ireland), Siliconrepublic (Ireland), EurekAlert (USA), newsWise (USA), AZO Life Sciences (UK) Phys (UK).
Our major research interest include:
- Understanding mycotoxin production of fungi using molecular biology and epigenetic tools.
- Reducing mycotoxins in food and feed sources for food safety and security.
- Use of fungal enzymes for bioremediation of pollution.
- Use of fungal biomass production.
- Using fungi and fungal enzymes for circular economy.
We will be organising Europes largest Fungal Genetics Conference, 17th European Conference on Fungal Genetics (ECFG) in Dublin, Ireland in March 2025. We encourage all fungal researchers and plant pathologists working with fungi to participate in 17th ECFG.
