Why did you study Mathematics at University?

Mathematics was something I enjoyed all through school, so it seemed only natural to pursue it at university.

Describe what you do now and how mathematics is useful to you.

I completed a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, U.S.A., and then accepted a post-doctoral research position in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Muenster, Germany. I joined the Differential Geometry group, which is directed by Prof. Burkhard Wilking and consists of many internationally recognized mathematicians.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of doing a degree in Mathematics?

Be prepared to work hard. Mathematics is difficult but incredibly fulfilling. The skills that will be acquired during the course of a degree in mathematics may be applied to all walks of life. The ability to see to the heart of an everyday problem is a skill not to be underestimated.

Would you recommend that people study Maths in Maynooth?

I would recommend studying in Maynooth to anybody who asked me. As for studying mathematics in Maynooth, I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for the preparation I received in Maynooth. In addition, the department is wonderfully friendly and I still go back to visit whenever I'm in Maynooth.
