Zanele Muholi is the 2016 recipient of the Infinity Award for Documentary and Photojournalism and has previously won the Fine Prize for an emerging artist at the 2013 Carnegie International, a 2013 Prince Claus Award, and the 2013 Index on Censorship – Freedom of Expression Art award among others. She is co-founder of the Forum for the Empowerment of Women and founder of Inkanyiso, a multi-media internet platform for disseminating visual histories, skills and training among LGBTI communities in South Africa. Her best known work, Faces and Phases, a series of portraits which explores the ambiguities of sexual identity and the act of passing, was exhibited at the São Paulo Biennale 2010, Documenta 13 2012 and the Venice Biennale 2013. Her most recent exhibition, Zanele Muholi: Isibonelo/Evidence at the Brooklyn Museum provides the most comprehensive presentation of her work in installation, photography and video to date.
