MUSSI/Geography Early Career Research Skills Seminar Series
- Thursdays, 15:30 - 17:00
- MUSSI (2nd floor Iontas)
- Spring: 3rd April – May | Autumn: October – November (TBC)
Following the success of 2023's seminar series, MUSSI and the Geography Research Committee are pleased to introduce the 2025 Early Career Research Skills Seminar Series. This initiative aims to bring together PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, early career researchers, and senior academics for focused discussions on key skills essential for advancing an academic career.
Each session will feature a panel discussion with early-career and senior researchers, providing insights into a range of professional development topics and allowing ample time for open dialogue.
The series will kick off with a round of introductions and ‘lightning talks’ on April 3rd, offering participants an opportunity to share their research in an informal setting.
Planned Topics Include:
• Introductions & Lightning Talks (first session on 3rd April)
• Research career paths, balancing career and family, and securing the next job
• Strategic approaches to dissemination and writing for journals
• Securing funding and scholarships
• Research impact, engagement with public policy, and community-engaged research
• Building research networks, social media, and dissemination strategies
• Insights from funding review panels (e.g., SFI/IRC/ERC)
• Perspectives from journal editors and reviewers
• Experiences from academic promotions panels
This series provides a great opportunity for networking, skill-building, and discussions on navigating academia at various career stages. All Faculty of Social Sciences graduate students, postdocs, and ECRs are encouraged to attend, as well as others across the university who may be interested.
We look forward to welcoming you for engaging discussions, peer support, and (hopefully) a social gathering afterward!
