'Designing the BBC' Book Launches in Maynooth and London

People attending MU book launch

'Designing the BBC: A History of Motion Graphics', published by Bloomsbury Academic, began with a wonderful launch at Maynooth University's Department of Design Innovation, hosted by special guest Paula Williams from Ravensbourne University London who co-edited the book with Dr Iain Macdonald. This was an opportunity to present the background to the book and share design practice with academics, students and guests from diverse fields.

London saw an amazing launch in collaboration with global award-winning Visual Effects company Framestore and Ravensbourne University London.

The night brought together nearly a hundred strong from the past, present and future of Pioneers in Motion: a personal message from the father of motion graphics in the UK - Bernard Lodge (Doctor Who titles series 1-4), with a follow-up from design legend Graham McCallum (Blackadder titles), a fascinating talk on the lasting legacy of the BBC’s Design Department from Jane Fielder at RedBee Creative and finishing with Framestore founder Mike McGee’s mind-bending walk through Framestore’s early BBC beginnings, an incredible body of work (Walking with Dinosaurs, Harry Potter, Wicked etc) and most recent exploration with GenAI.

"It's been nearly 30 years since I worked at the BBC - so it felt like we were all time travellers in the TARDIS!" said Iain.
