Student in RTE programme on Emigration and Technology

Thursday, December 19, 2013 - 00:00

One of our second year students, Elish O'Driscoll, will feature in a forthcoming documentary on transnational relationships and the role played by technology in maintaining connections amongst the current generation emigration and the families they have left behind. The programmne is called 'Missing You' and it will be broadcast as part of RTÉ Two's Reality Bites series on the 26th December at 9pm, and repeated on the 2nd January at 9pm. The following desciption has been provided by RTE.

'In the past, because of emigration, families would have drifted apart and other close relationships may have even ended over time.  But with new technologies, loved ones can share their lives in a whole new way.  ‘#Missing You’ is a moving portrayal of how people now keep in contact.

Compiled of Skype video calls over the course of six months, we follow a number of Irish people, far from home, as they keep in touch with their loved ones.  We record the patterns of everyday life from Terenure to Malmo, Clonakilty to Perth, Mullingar to New York. By recording the video conversations of our group, as they call home to their friends and family, we experience everything with them, from big announcements to unexpected moments of everyday magic across great distances.  A father separated from his family; best friends embarking on a new adventure across the world from each other; a son introducing his new baby to his parents.'
