World-class research based on a distinctive, interdisciplinary approach to the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering and technology, and the arts and humanities.
The MU International Office is the first point of contact for international students applying for full-degree, Erasmus, Study Abroad, and Summer School programmes, and supports MU students who wish to study abroad.
Dr Máire Nic an Bhaird is an Associate Professor in the Froebel Department, Maynooth University. Her areas of teaching and research include; the life and work of Douglas Hyde, Ireland's first President, Censorship of Irish Language Literature (1920-1960), Children's Literature in the Irish Language, Education for the Science-Society nexus, History of Education. She is supervising undergraduate, masters and PhD students' research theses. Máire is the recipient of the 2022 Maynooth University Teaching Award. Her teaching is grounded in a pedagogy of community engaged learning. Máire has also won teaching bursaries and awards for the creation of teaching materials and programmes connected with MU modules that she coordinates; Athy Sensory Trails Project Live 2021/2022, Draíocht Dara - COGG 2021/2022, Cuimhní Scoile - National Folklore Collection of Ireland 2021/2022, The Tairseach Project - Project Live 2020/2021, The Dearcán Project - Kildare Healthy Ireland Programme Award 2020, European Language Label Award.
Máire is leading the university’s central role in the UCD-led €2 million Horizon Europe BioBeo project. This multi-actor project comprises a pan-European consortium of 15 partners from across education, science and technology and the wider society. Dr Nic an Bhaird has been awarded a budget of ca. ¼ million euro, and will lead an international team specialising in the development of bespoke education programmes to address the science-society nexus. A key focus is on embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into primary and secondary education programmes across Europe, leading to enhanced society-wide understanding of a sustainable future for the next generation. Other partners include An Taisce and the MU Erasmus partners, RUAS and ODISEE universities. This is a great opportunity for MU to play a key European leadership role in this rapidly developing area of education.
Máire is a partner in an 8 million European Commission funded Horizon 2020 project AgroCycle addressing the 'circular economy'. Her team's role relates to translating the scientific concepts of the 'circular economy' into child-centred language suitable for the primary school curriculum. She has several publications relating to her research and is actively involved in several new H2020 research bids. She has also presented her research interests on national and international television and radio programmes.

"Children are like tiny flowers; they are varied and need care, but each is beautiful alone and glorious when seen in a community of peers," Friedrich Froebel.
My teaching is based on the philosophy of Friedrich Froebel (1782-1842) who advocated reverence for every child, learning through activity, exploration of the environment and acceptance of the gifts of each individual. I have the privilege to teach, inspire and create with the next generation of teachers within MU's teacher education programme. Inspiring my students is a role I take seriously. Together we are working for future generations. An integral part of my teaching is connecting theory and practice. My main research areas are The Life and Work of Douglas Hyde and Environmental Sustainable Education. My main teaching interests are Cumas na Gaeilge, Litríocht na Gaeilge, Dubhghlas de hÍde, Climate Action and Climate Change, History of Education. The learning experience through participation in my module EDF485 Teanga an Ghrá is grounded in a pedagogy of community engaged learning via An Tairseach which was awarded a Project Live teaching bursary. I am module coordinator for EDF225, EDF447, EDF627, EDF485, EDF126, EDF446, EDF602A, EDF621.
