The presenter of 'Gafa sa Túr' is best-selling writer and historian Séamas MacAnnaidh, and he is investigating the story of the Irish in the Tower of London, England's State prison. In every generation, from the fifteenth century until 1916, Irish people were among the prisoners detained there. A number of them actually died whilst incarcerated in the Tower while others were led out from there to their execution at Tyburn.
Among the first of these prisoners were the ninth and tenth Earls of Kildare of Maynooth Castle.
In the first three episodes in the series, Professor Marian Lyons (Head of History Department, Maynooth University) whose field of expertise is Tudor Ireland, talks about the detention of the Earls of Kildare, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Armagh Richard Creagh, and the Gaelic lord and rebel Brian O'Rourke of West Bréifne in north west Ireland during the Tudor period.
