Biography

Dr Raul Cârstocea is Lecturer in Twentieth-Century European History. He completed his PhD at University College London and has previously worked as Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Leicester, Lecturer in European Studies at the Europa Universität Flensburg, Senior Research Associate at the European Centre for Minority Issues, and Teaching Fellow at University College London. He has held research fellowships at the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, the Institute for East and Southeast European Studies in Regensburg, the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, King’s College London, and the Imre Kértesz Kolleg Jena. His research interests focus on antisemitism, nationalism, fascism, and more broadly on state formation and nation-building processes in 19th and 20th century Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe and their consequences for minority groups. He is co-editor of the Modern History of Politics and Violence book series at Bloomsbury and Vice-Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe at the Council of Europe.

Research Interests

My forthcoming monograph, provisionally titled Enemies of the Resurrection: Antisemitism and Fascism in the Ideology of the Legionary Movement in Interwar Romania, addresses the role of anti-Semitism in the ideology of the ‘Legion of the Archangel Michael’, Romania’s interwar fascist movement, and the role it performed as a mobilising political tool.

My other research interests include:
  • State formation processes and the role of alterity in negotiating definitions of ‘the national’
  • Perceptions and self-perceptions of Central and Eastern Europe as a periphery in European and global history
  • Transnational antisemitism and transnational far-right networks, historical and contemporary
  • Temporalities of fascist movements and regimes
  • Forms of labour (voluntary and forced) in fascist movements and regimes
  • The Holocaust in Romania
  • Nationalism and imperialism in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Representations of colonialism in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Critical area studies (with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe)
  • Psychoanalytic approaches to anti-Semitism, racism, and othering
My next major research project examines interwar fascism as a global anti-universalist project, with a particular focus on fascist temporalities and their restructuring of space.
