Biography

Dr Karen Lynch Shally joined the School of Law and Criminology as Assistant Professor in September 2019.

Karen's research focuses on law, regulation and policy in financial markets and services, with a particular emphasis on regulation and consumer protection in the retail financial services sector. She delivers modules on Banking & Financial Law (LW453), Aspects of Commerical Law (LW296) and Law and Governance (LW480) and created a new module for the LLB programme Financial Services Regulation (LW491).

Karen received her doctorate from the National University of Ireland Galway in March 2017. Her doctoral research analysed the impact of the Global Financial Crisis on national frameworks of residential mortgage regulation in a comparative EU context; querying the extent to which the regulatory paradigm had changed from the pre to post crisis period, and the implications of such change for lenders and borrowers. The research was awarded dual research scholarships; an Irish Research Council (IRC) Government of Ireland Postgraduate scholarship and a Hardiman Research Scholarship from NUI Galway.

Karen holds B.Comm, LLB and LLM by research degrees from NUI Galway and a Professional Diploma in University Teaching and Learning from University College Dublin, and prior to joining the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth, she lectured at the Sutherland School of Law, University College Dublin. She has presented and published her work both nationally and internationally.
