'The Hudson Brothers and Music in Mid-nineteenth-century Ireland'.
This paper examines the critical writings and musical activities of William and Henry Hudson with specific reference to the importance which they attached to European classical music for the development of Irish cultural nationalism around the time of the Young Ireland movement.
Biography
Michael Murphy has lectured in the Department of Music, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick since 2001. He co-edited Musical Constructions of Nationalism with Harry White (Cork, 2001), and Music in Nineteenth-Century Ireland (IMS 9) with Jan Smaczny (Dublin, 2007), and was a subject editor for EMIR. His recent publications include chapters in Michael Dervan (ed.), The Invisible Art: A Century of Music in Ireland, 1916-2016 (Dublin, 2016) and Lorraine Byrne Bodley (ed.), Music Preferred: Essays in Honour of Harry White (Vienna, 2018). He served on the council of the Society for Musicology in Ireland, is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the Society for Musicology in Ireland, and has created many music documentaries for RTÉ lyric fm.
