Why study Spanish
Maynooth University’s dynamic Department of Spanish gives students a thorough grounding in the language while introducing them to Spanish as a world language and cornerstone of many vibrant cultures. Spanish is offered in a friendly, supportive environment at both beginner and non-beginner levels in first year. After first year, all students follow a common sequence.
There’s a wide variety on offer for all tastes and interests, including Spanish and Latin American Literature, Women’s Writing, Translation, Phonetics, Chicana/o Studies (the study of Spanish among the Mexican-American community in the United States), and Spanish and Latin American Cinema and Cultural Studies. Other increasingly important languages such as Portuguese and Catalan are offered as options in the second and final years.
The members of the Department are internationally recognised experts in their fields and offer a varied programme to reflect these interests. Recent events have included a colloquium on the Irishman William Lamport, the model for the figure of Zorro, which was co-organised with the Embassy of Mexico, together with a number of film screenings.
