In the context of Irelands current debates on neutrality and international peace efforts, it is timely to explore what exactly is meant by EU peacebuilding efforts, and activities related to its Common Security and Defence Policy.
On Friday 16th June, the Kennedy Institute, in collaboration with the MU Dept. of International Development, will conduct an online seminar exploring these issues.
This seminar explores the EUs approach to peacebuilding and examines the EU global role as crisis manager and capacity builder. It specifically discusses the significant contributions of the EU to civilian peacebuilding, and evaluates the activities of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) within their rule of law and human rights peacebuilding missions, since their first deployment over 20 years ago.
The seminar will also discuss the anticipated changes in the Civilian Compact agreed last month. The new Compact set out 20 commitments to strengthen civilian CSDP in the context of strong concern about the emergence or escalation of conflicts in the EUs neighbourhood, as well as other challenges such as the rise of revisionist actions, and flagrant violations of internal law and human rights.
The seminar features contributions from
- Dr Kieran Doyle, Kennedy Institute, and Dept of International Development, Maynooth University,
- Mr Chris Reynolds, formerly Head of Mission, EU Capacity Building Mission in Somalia,
- and Mr Kim Tuorila from the European External Action Service
