Abstract:

Ireland is a small island downwind of a large ocean. That ocean, the Atlantic, between Ireland and Canada is the only place on earth that has cooled in the past 100 years. Why is this and what are the implications for Ireland?

This talk explores the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation or Gulf Stream System, looks at its influence on climate globally and in Ireland, and discusses the contested knowledge about whether this system of ocean currents could cease due to climate change.

Following Dr Gerard McCarthy's lecture there will be a panel discussion chaired by Jonathan McCrea, host of Futureproof on Newstalk.
