This workshop seeks to address the global experience of being LGBTQ+, highlighting human rights abuses in various countries and efforts to resist and survive in such contexts. The United Nations Human Rights Council's resolution of June 30, 2016, on “Protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation, and gender identity,” commits the UN to combatting discrimination and violence on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity. Speakers will address challenges in achieving this goal in various regions of the world, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Russia, South-East Asia and Southern Africa. The workshop will also feature, in the second hour, a screening of Trans*it, a short documentary by Maria Avgeri of Maynooth University that poignantly charts the experience of LGBTQ asylum-seekers in Greece.
