The Dean of Teaching and Learning Seminar Series in conjunction with the Faculty of Science and Engineering is delighted to host a one-day workshop which will explore the role of chatbots in science and engineering education. Workshop participants will contribute to the discussion on assessment literacy in a chatbot era. There will be an opportunity for six participants to contribute, formally, by presenting short papers on their experiences with chatbots in science and engineering education, please see below for full details. 9:00-9:30 AM: Registration and Networking
9:30-9:45 AM: Introduction and Welcome Remarks (Dean of Science & Engineering)
9:45-10:45 AM: Keynote Speech: “Assessment Literacy in the era of ChatGPT” by Professor Phil Newton. Professor Newton is the Director of Learning and Teaching for the Swansea University Medical School.
10:45-11:00 AM: Coffee Break and Networking
11:00-12:15 PM: Round-Table Discussion: "Chatbots in Science and Engineering Education: Opportunities and Challenges". Participants will be divided into groups and will discuss topics related to chatbots in science and engineering education, for example, chatbots for laboratory work, chatbots for personalised learning, chatbots for career guidance, academic misconduct, etc. There will be reporting in the final 15m of the session.
12:15-1:00 PM: Lunch Break (45m) and Networking. Lunch will be provided for participants.
1:00-2:30 PM: Short Presentations: "Chatbots in Action in Science and Engineering Education". MU FSE Colleagues will present research, case studies or position papers related to chatbots in science and engineering education. Each presentation should be limited to 10 minutes, followed by a 5-minute Q&A (Six Papers).
2:30-3:30 PM: Panel Discussion: "The Future of Chatbots in MU Science and Engineering Education”. A panel of colleagues will lead a discussion on the future of chatbots in science and engineering education, including the challenges that need to be addressed, the potential impact on teaching and learning, academic integrity, and the ethical considerations.
3:30-4:15 PM: Practical Session: "Designing Effective Prompts for Teaching, Learning & Assessment". Participants will be divided into small groups and work together to design and learn about effective prompts for different types of activities such as lab work, homework assignments, and assessments. Facilitators will provide guidance and feedback. Refreshments for participants will be provided during this session.
4:15-4:30 PM: Closing Remarks and Wrap-Up

This in an on-campus event. Participation in the event is free, but requires registration using Eventbrite here. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for participants.
(ii) Chatbots in Action in Science and Engineering Education
We are interested in receiving submissions of relevant 10m in-person presentations for the Short Presentations session (1:00 -2:30 PM). Please send a 200w submission outlining the presentation, by email, to John Keating (john.keating@mu.ie) before 17th May, 17:00 for consideration. Submissions must be related to the use of AI in Teaching & Learning. Details on the presentation format, etc. will be provided on acceptance. We would particularly welcome praxes based submissions, but relevant theoretical perspectives are also welcome.
(iii) The Future of Chatbots in MU Science and Engineering Education
We are interested in receiving discussion questions from colleagues for consideration during the 2:30-3:30 PM panel on the future of chatbots in MU science and engineering education. There will also be time to discuss questions presented on the day. Please send questions to John Keating (john.keating@mu.ie) by email.
