Maynooth University and Kildare County Council successfully hosted the ‘Brigid’s Worlds’ conference on September 13 and 14, marking a significant milestone in the celebration of St Brigid’s legacy. The conference, which welcomed both scholars and enthusiasts, commemorated the 1500th anniversary of St Brigid's passing by exploring the rich heritage of one of Ireland's most significant patron saints.
Across the two days, attendees heard from a diverse lineup of speakers who examined St Brigid's life and her Church of Kildare from the 5th to the 9th centuries. Notable speakers included Prof Catherine McKenna from Harvard University and Dr Niamh Wycherley and Prof David Stifter from Maynooth University. Each session explored various aspects of St Brigid's legacy, covering early medieval religious practices and her cultural impact.

The conference was a huge success, with enthusiastic participation and lively discussions. Scholars presented their latest research, offering insights into St Brigid's historical significance and her impact on Irish culture and spirituality.
Speaking after the event, Sonya Kavanagh, Chief Executive of Kildare County Council, commented: "We were delighted to partner with Maynooth University on this significant occasion. The conference was not only a celebration of St Brigid's life but also an important reminder of the value of preserving our cultural heritage through scholarship and community engagement."

In addition to the academic presentations, the conference included a public talk, an exhibition of ogham and a guided tour of Kildare town and Cathedral. The public talk, delivered by Prof McKenna, titled ‘Brigid: The knowns and unknowns,’ explored the narratives surrounding St Brigid and their historical significance.
The ‘Brigid’s World’ conference formed a key part of the wider Brigid 1500 programme, which Kildare County Council organised to celebrate and commemorate the life and legacy of St. Brigid.
