On Sunday 16th of June 2024, the Circus of Climate Horrors was one of the stalls in the “Picnic in the Park”, which is an annual event organised by Maynooth Community Council in partnership with Kildare County Council. During the three-hour event, five researchers from the Irish Climate Analysis and Research UnitS (ICARUS), Geography Department - Maynooth University had so much fun with lots of energetic and excited children and parents who were interested in the Circus of Climate Horrors.
Participants had the opportunity to spin the wheel to global warming and get one of the clowns to know more about the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) that are based on the different possible scenarios that we could experience in the next few decades depending on how well we mitigate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and global warming.
The Circus of Climate Horrors also debuted the new ‘Save the Island’ game which is a 3D model designed by master students in Climate Change. This is a new activity that allowed participants to understand sea level rise as a result of global warming triggered by human activities. Participants could see how sea level rise can impact coastal communities but also discuss how we can mitigate negative impacts if we reduce the GHG emissions and adapt to potential impacts to be more prepared.
