Maynooth University Department of Law is pleased to announce that two of our LLM graduands have been awarded prizes for their achievements in the Funds Law course which the Department offers in conjunction with top law firm, Matheson.

Funds Law is a masters-level course available to students of both the LLM (Global Legal Studies) and the LLM (International Business Law) masters programmes, the latter of which is awarded jointly by Maynooth University and the Catholic University of Lyon, France. This year, two students, Ronan Califf (LLM (Global Legal Studies) 2015) and Shane O'Callaghan (LLM (International Business Law) 2015), were awarded internships with Matheson, on foot of their results on our Funds Law module which the Department offers in conjunction with the law firm. Shane and Ronan will be working with the firm’s Asset Management and Investment Funds Group.

Each year, the top-performing students in Funds are given the chance to compete for an internship at Matheson. Ronan and Shane were formally announced as this year's recipients at a reception in the firm's Dublin office on  8 September 2015.

Speaking at the reception, Head of Investment Funds, Tara Doyle, said: "Matheson is delighted to be part of Shane and Ronan’s success story to date and to help fast-track them into a thriving sector of Ireland’s economy through this dynamic third level initiative. Partnerships such as this between academia and industry are vital to develop Irish university students' expertise and employment prospects, and to give them the skills necessary to succeed in the Irish international financial services sector." Additionally, Professor Michael Doherty, Head of the Department of Law, emphasised the fact that "this innovative and dynamic funds law course...is not taught at any other Irish university."

What to the students have to say?
Ronan: "I am thrilled to have won this prestigious award. I thoroughly enjoyed the Funds Law course - and what I learned from it will be extremely beneficial to me now as I start my internship with Matheson."

Shane: "This internship award is a fantastic opportunity at the start of my career and I am delighted to have chosen to study this area of law and to have competed for this prize."

We wish many congratulations to Shane and Ronan who will both be graduating with first class honours this October.
