Monday, September 28, 2015 - 11:15

Maynooth University Department of Law joins the Irish legal profession in mourning the recent passing of Mr Justice Paul Carney, the country’s pre-eminent criminal judge who had recently retired from the High Court.

Mr Justice Carney had retired in April of this year after a 50-year legal career which included 24 years as a High Court Judge. In recent years, Mr Justice Carney was appointed as an Honorary Professor of Law at Maynooth University and was a keen supporter of law student activities and events at the University, particularly the annual Silken Thomas Moot Court Competition, over which he regularly adjudicated.

All of the staff and students at the Department of Law were deeply saddened to hear of Mr Justice Carney's passing and we extend our sincerest sympathies to his friends and family. The judge's remains will be removed to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Donnybrook, tomorrow (Tuesday), arriving for funeral Mass at 11.30am. The burial will take place afterwards at Deansgrange cemetery.
