    Biography

    I am a Professor in Physical Geography (Climate Change) at Maynooth University in Ireland and Director of the Irish Climate Analysis and Research UnitS group (ICARUS). I'm on all the usual academia type things its de rigueur to be on nowadays:

    I completed my PhD in 2001 at the University of East Anglia and have since worked in a mix of government, academia and research SMEs across 4 countries (UK, USA, Norway and Ireland). My main historical interests have been in the investigation of observed climate changes globally, with a particular emphasis upon temperature and humidity changes from in-situ measurements (marine, land and weather balloon). I have also undertaken publication on detection and attribution (which was the subject of my PhD thesis) and atmospheric reanalyses.

    I am the Chair of the Global Climate Observing System's Atmospheric Observations Panel for Climate. I sit on and chair several Global Climate Observing System and World Meteorological Organization bodies and task teams.

    I have historically been funded on various Horizon projects including GAIA-CLIM on which I was the overall lead. I am involved in various Copernicus Climate Change Service contracts, including leadership on a contract concerned with the management and provision of historical in-situ surface meteorological holdings.

    For the Sixth Assessment Report cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change I was a Coordinating Lead Author on the WGI contribution and a Section Facilitator for the Synthesis Report. I was also a lead author on Volume 1 and the Synthesis report for Ireland's Climate Change Assessment. 

    I was an expert advisor the Ireland's Citizens Assembly in their considerations in how to make Ireland a leader in tackling climate change. I was then an independent adviser to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action. Since 2021 I have been a member of Ireland's Climate Change Advisory Council and Chair its Adaptation Committee.

    I am a founding member and current co-chair of the All Island Climate and Biodiverrsity Research Network.
