Thomas Appleby, a second year PhD student, has just been awarded a prestigious scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to conduct research for one year at the Freie Universität in Berlin. His research project addresses the influence of Lutheran Pietism on the nascent psychiatric profession in late-eighteenth/early-nineteenth century Prussia.  This grant will allow him to engage with colleagues at the doctoral colloquium (Kolloquium für Kultur- und Religionsgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit) organised at the University by Prof. Dr. Alexander Schunka, while conducting research at the State Archives, State Libraries and archives of the Charité Medical University in Berlin and making regular research trips to the Martin-Luther University and the Pietist Fränkische Stiftung, both in Halle.  The Department wishes him many congratulations and every success in this endeavour.
