Music Technology / Computer Music Research

Our Music Technology research draws on expertise in Computer Music, Digital Signal Processing, Electroacoustic Composition and electronic instrument design and building and is coupled with excellent facilities in the dedicated music technology lab, making study at Maynooth University popular among students from a variety of backgrounds.

As well as being accomplished composers in electroacoustic and computer music, staff are also authors of some of the main reference books in this field. In addition, they co-lead the Csound software development team, a software composition tool originally developed in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), one of the global leaders in music technology.

Given the sizeable experience which has been accrued among the staff, Music Technology research at Maynooth University has organically become interdisciplinary with frequent collaborations between staff and researchers in Computer Science and Composition, as well as forging impressive links with a number of European and American institutions.

Research in Music Technology in Maynooth is concentrated in the area of Computer Music, Digital Signal Processing and Electroacoustic Composition and electronic instrument design and building. Staff are internationally-recognised researchers in these areas.

Professor Victor Lazzarini has a significant track record of publications in the fields of sound synthesis and processing, music programming and computer music languages. He is the co-author of a major reference book in Computer Music, The Audio Programming Book (MIT Press, 2010), and co-leads the Csound software development team.

Dr Gordon Delap is a composer of electroacoustic music, interested in the application of new sound synthesis tools to composition. He has been working in close collaboration with researchers at the Acoustic and Audio Research Group at the University of Edinburgh in the development of tools for composers.

Dr Iain McCurdy is a composer who works in the fields of electroacoustic and electronic music and also in the fields of interactive sound installations and instrument design, utilising sensor technology. He is co-editor of the Csound Journal and recently co-authored Csound: A Sound and Music Computing System with Professor Victor Lazzarini.

Music Technology research at Maynooth is intrinsically interdisciplinary. Professor Lazzarini leads the Sound and Digital Music Technology Group, which also includes members of the Computer Science Department. The Group is the premier research team in the area of Music Technology in Ireland, and has developed a number of international collaboration links with European and American institutions. It has also forged links with the industry and participated in technology transfer projects with companies working in media and music software.

Recent international research projects include the DSP Ear Training project with a group of Norwegian universities, and participation in various Ubiquitous Music programs with a number of institutions in Brazil, as well as collaboration with researchers from Aalto University (Finland), St. Etienne University and GRAME (France), Erlangen University (Germany), and Edinburgh University (Scotland).
