Unlocking the Potential of People with Convictions: Removing Barriers to Higher Education
This seminar will discuss the work of the Unlocking Potential project. The project, funded by the Public Sector Innovation Fund 2020, aims to create a 'toolkit' for HEIs to guide the redevelopment of admissions policies and practices for people with convictions. The seminar (led by Prof. Claire Hamilton) will discuss the work of the project to date with a focus on the reasons for reform and will showcase the Fair Admissions Toolkit and website developed by the team. The seminar will end with a viewing of a short video with Jimmy Leonard, one of the peer researchers in a Community Needs Analysis undertaken by Sarah Meaney in collaboration with the Pathways Centre as part of the College Connect programme. The video tells the story of Jimmy’s life and tries to convey what ‘transformation’ looks and feels like. The subsequent panel discussion (led by Dr. Joe Garrighy) will focus on the changes needed to support people with convictions to access and participate in higher education and will include participants from the community needs analysis speaking on their experience of education.
