The historic South Campus is the focal point of many Music Department activities. The Departmental Office and many lectures are in Logic House. Adjacent to Logic House are the Music Technology Laboratory and Performance Suite, providing specialized facilities for study and practice.
Maynooth University Department of Music
ToggleMusic Studios
The Maynooth Music Studios are comprised of four studios, each focussing on different disciplinary areas, and a range of satellite and auxiliary workspaces. Music technology students are tutored in the use of the studios so that they can use all studios independently for their own work.
Audient Studio
The Audient Studio is Maynooth’s longest established studio and presents a traditional recording studio arrangement with a large control room built around an Audient ASP 8024 analogue mixing console and a large live room containing a Kawai grand piano, Ludwig drum kit, electric instrument amplifiers and other percussion instruments. The two rooms are joined via cabling looms, three sound insulated doors and a large, triple-glazed window. A variety of industry-standard DAWs are offered on the accompanying RADAR Music System computer. Monitoring is through a pair of Genelec 8040 speakers along with a Dynaudio subwoofer.
5.1 Studio
The 5.1 studio features five Genelec 8040 speakers in standard surround format along with a Genelec 7380 AP subwoofer. This studio can also be used for work in stereo. There is also an Arturia Keylab 88 MkII for composition. Specialist activities in this studio include surround sound work, ambisonics, composition for film, media and games, video editing, electroacoustic composition and mixing and mastering. Software provided includes Pro Tools, Cubase, Spitfire professional orchestral suite, Waves plugins, Davinci Resolve Studio and Reaper.
Octophonic Studio
The Octophonic Studio is an 8.1 studio built around a circle of Genelec 8040 speakers along with a Genelec 7050 subwoofer. This studio also features an extensive collection of synthesisers including a modular system based around the designs of the Moog System 55 and the ARP 2500. A range of additional synthesisers and hardware are offered including an ARP Odyssey clone and a ROLI Seaboard Rise controller. Specialist activities in the Octophonic Studio include electroacoustic composition, hardware synthesis, mini concerts and workshops.
Annex Studio
The Annex Studio is Maynooth’s newest studio and is built around a Behringer Wing digital mixing console, Focal Twin 6 speakers and an iMac Studio computer, featuring a full suite of DAWs and plugins. The Annex Studio connects to four live rooms called iso booths, is set up for stereo and it geared towards traditional recording studio activities of recording musicians and bands.
Iso Booth Suite
Maynooth Music Studios include four iso booths: Iso Booth 1 is large enough to house a full band and includes a Yamaha drum kit and amplifiers, Iso Booths 2 – 4 are intended for one or two musicians for rehearsal, lessons or overdubbing and also include electric instrument amplifiers.
Annex Live Room
The Annex Live Room is a large space for bands, ensembles and workshops that can also be connected to the Annex Studio Control Room for recording. A PA, monitoring and Kawai acoustic piano are also provided in this room.
iMac Lab
The iMac Lab is a computer laboratory comprising 7 iMac computers with all music software students will need to use for their studies. All computers have MIDI keyboard controllers attached and there is a set of Genelec 8030 speakers for sharing audio work in the room. The iMac Lab is used for some teaching but is mainly available for free access to students at any time for their own work.
Performance and Lecture Spaces
Music lectures take place in several locations around the campus. The Department of Music has three specialised rooms for lectures, each of which has been recently refurbished: The Bewerunge Room, The O’Callaghan Room, and The New Music Room. Each room is equipped with a grand piano, data projector with PC and laptop connections, built-in audio, and a document camera. Each room also features a Sympodium interactive display system.
Regular lunchtime concerts, final-year recitals, and many student-run events occur in Riverstown Hall. The Aula Maxima has recently been used for orchestral concerts, electroacoustic concerts, and concerts organised by participants on the Music Technology BA programme.

Practice Facilities
The primary venue for practice and performance tuition is the Performance Suite, a purpose-built building located on South Campus behind Logic House. Since its opening in 2008, the Performance Suite has provided practice facilities for all instrumental and vocal students. Rooms in the Performance Suite are acoustically treated and equipped with pianos.
Additional practice space is available in the Practice Room Block adjacent to the Performance Suite, housing both upright pianos and clavinova keyboards. The Practice Room Block also houses the Keyboard Lab, which features nine Yamaha clavinovas for group keyboard work.
