The Maynooth Centre for European and Eurasian Studies and the Department of Sociology host a special Roundtable event 'Trump 2.0: How scared should we be?' This roundtable discussion will examine the new Trump administration and interrogate what it means for the United States, Ireland, Europe and the world. Already Trump has set fire to the rules-based international order, continuously fought with and insulted US allies, while committing to bringing Russia back in from the cold. It has attacked birthright citizenship rights in the US, criticised judges as activists, and Vice-President Vance has suggested the administration disregards court judgments it does not like. It has unleashed Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to take a scythe to public bodies and sack federal workers in large numbers. For many, these actions are consistent with a pronounced lapse into authoritarianism. At the very least we can say that Trump 2.0 is a much more radical beast than the first administration. The Roundtable brings together expert speakers who will examine these questions.
Chair: Professor Pauline Cullen (Department of Sociology)

Dr. A Jamie Saris (Department of Anthropology)
