Dr Lorraine Grimes

Biography
Dr Lorraine Grimes is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the Horizon 2020 project INVOLVE: Exploring Democracy in the European Union. The project investigates the level of public involvement and engagement in public services and policy development across four different disciplines including Health, Housing, Education and Employment in eight participating European countries.
Lorraine was previously situated in the Social Science Institute at Maynooth University on the project ‘Digital Preservation of Reproductive Health Resources: Archiving the Eighth’.
Lorraine has a PhD from the National University of Ireland Galway. Her thesis titled ‘Migration and Assistance: Irish Unmarried Mothers in Britain 1926-1973’, examines the institutionalisation of Irish unmarried mothers in institutions in Britain, and explores issues of maternity care, adoption, socio-economic class, unmarried fathers and advocacy for unmarried mothers in the 1970s.
Lorraine has co-authored a number of key reports on abortion policy for the Department of Health in Ireland, the World Health Organisation, and others. Lorraine was lead author of the report ‘Too Many Barriers: Experiences of Abortion in Ireland after Repeal’.
Lorraine has a number of publications focusing on reproductive healthcare and unmarried motherhood in Britain and Ireland.
