The THE World University rankings is the definitive list of the top universities globally. In 2020, 1,800 universities participated and almost 1,400 were ranked from over 90 countries worldwide. The THE ranking uses 13 performance indicators to provide a comprehensive and balanced comparison from 5 core missions: Teaching, Research, International outlook, Citations and Industry income.

THE Impact Rankings
The THE Impact Rankings assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). MU participated for the first time in 2020 alongside 768 universities from 85 countries.

World QS University Ranking
The QS World University Ranking is published each year by Quacquarelli Symnonds (QS). Maynooth University currently participate in the QS Overall Rankings and the QS Subject Rankings. For both rankings a number of metrics are used to measure the performance of a University.

UI GreenMetric World University Ranking
The UI Green Metric World University Ranking was launched in 2010 to rank universities worldwide on their commitment to Green Campus and sustainability. The ranking has a clear focus on climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling and green transportation. The ranking also looks at infrastructure, education and research.

StudentSurvey.ie (formerly The Irish Survey of Student Engagement (ISSE)
StudentSurvey.ie (The Irish Survey of Student Engagement) is a national survey that asks students about their experiences of higher education. The survey is aimed at first year and final year undergraduate students as well as all postgraduate taught students and is conducted each year. The Institutional Research Offices provides analysis of the data and University, Faculty, School and Programme level.

Annual Survey of Incoming Students
The institutional research office undertakes an annual survey of incoming first year undergraduate students. The survey is used to determine the main characteristics of students starting at MU and their reasons for choosing to study at MU. The information gathered is extremely helpful to the University in planning for, and meeting the needs of our students. It is useful for our colleagues in Admissions, Communications, Accommodation and Careers offices among others.
Key Performance Indicators
Through the University Performance Framework, data are collated on an annual basis using documented definitions, census dates and sign off procedures to compile a suite of approximately 42 key performance indicators and 91 secondary indicators that cover a variety of topics. In relation to the profile of the student population, these include details on numbers of undergraduates and postgraduates, full- and part-time students, age of students (under or over threshold for mature student status), socio-economic background, whether normally domiciled outside Ireland, number that include a period of study outside Ireland, CAO entry points, non-presence and non-progression rates, completion rates, academic grades achieved, and first destinations. The research metrics include funding inputs by source of funding, and normalised output metrics such as numbers of publications, citation rates, and PhD graduates.
The KPI framework also provides income and expenditure indicators with particular reference to expenditure on core academic functions. The data on staff enables monitoring of not only staff/student ratios but also the gender profile of staff, and trends in the proportion of staff with highest academic qualifications, e.g. PhD award. The trend in the amount of net academic space per student is also monitored on an annual basis. Many of these internal indicators are benchmarked against comparable data for other universities published by the HEA.
The purpose of the performance framework is to assist the President, the University Executive and University governance structures in monitoring the overall progress of the University and the success of the university against the goals in the University Strategic Plan.
