Biology Research Day 2015 - Winners

The 4th Biology Research Day was held on the 12th of June and provided an opportunity for PhD and MSc students, postdocs and academic staff to present and discuss their research, and to get an overview of the current research activities in the department.
In total, 20 oral presentations were given on the day, including 13 by PhD students and 6 by postdocs, and 25 posters were presented during a lively morning poster session.

Best postgraduate talk and Roche Researcher of the Year:
Helen Kennelly (Cellular Immunology Lab): ‘Human MSC exert cytoprotective effects against emphysema through production of trophic mediators in vivo’
Two Runner-ups:
Stephen Dolan (Biotechnology Lab): ‘Combining reverse genetics and X-ray crystallography to elucidate the structure and function of a gliotoxin bis-thiomethyltransferase in Aspergillus fumigatus’
Therese Lynn, (Epithelial Immunobiology Lab) ‘Bone Morphogenetic Protein Expression in descending porcine airways’
Best postdoc talk:
Dr Niamh McCormack, (Host-Pathogen Interaction Lab) ‘Demonstrating a collaborative role between DDX3 and IKKε in breast cancer relevant gene expression’
Runner-up:
Dr. Fiachra Humphries, (Molecular Immunology): ‘ECSIT: A heart-breaking protein ‘
Best poster:
Johana Isaza-Correa (Molecular Immunology): ‘Role of Pellino 3 in the regulation of necroptosis’
Runner-up:
Rose Waldron (Biotechnology Lab): ‘The First draft Genome of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus will allow studies of house dust mites to embrace the omics era’
