Biography

Diarmuid O’Donoghue BSc, MSc, PhD in computer science and a Postgrad Diploma in Higher Education (PGDHE). He was elected to the steering committee of the Association for Computational Creativity (ACC) and is its current treasurer. He was course director for for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Double MSc on Dependable Software Engineering (DESEM) overseeing a consortium of 3 European Universities. He was responsible for setting up a Higher Diploma in Software Engineering (SkillNet).
He is interested in computational cognitive modelling, especially for analogical reasoning and conceptual blending. This work led to a growing focus on Computational Creativity. He is also interested in evolutionary optimization and the use of ancestral archives. Diarmuid was Senior Scientific Officer for the European "Dr Inventor" FET project.
He has participated in ~10 PhD award committees, graduated >20 MSc level students and supervised >80 undergraduate research projects.

Research Interests

Diarmuid O'Donoghue's research is focussed on developing cognitively inspired approaches to problem solving that locates and exploits non-obvious or latent similarity between information. In particularly he aims to detect untapped analogical similarity between computationally encoded information; including English text and in source code (in languages link Java, C#) and Python. Analogical similarity is of particular interest due to its reliance on topological similarity between the information sources. Specifically, analogy demands a focus on homomorphic subgraph to subgraph matching. He is also interested in comparison with LLM (like ChatGPT etc). He is also interested in related topics including; information extraction and retrieval augmented generation.

Modelling implicit bias: linking language, the media, and biased attitudes Co-PI Prejudicial attitudes exert a powerful influence on individuals and society more generally. Recent research suggests that the statistical patterns in how words are used in language may capture such biases. The goal of this project is to understand the links between the statistical patterns of words in language, their relationship to the formation of human biases and prejudicial attitudes, and how both language and biases are linked to people's behaviours. 503328
Dr Inventor: Promoting Scientific Creativity by Utilising Web-based Research Objects Senior Scientific Coordinator Scientific creativity and innovation represent the beating heart of European growth at a time of rapid technological change. Dr Inventor is built on the vision that technologies have great potential to supplement human ingenuity in science by overcoming the limitations that people suffer in pursuing scientific discovery. It presents an original system that will provide inspiration for scientific creativity by utilising the rich presence of web-based research resources. Dr Inventor will act as a personal research assistant, utilising machine-empowered search and computation to bring researchers extended perspectives for scientific innovation by informing them of a broad spectrum of relevant research concepts and approaches, by assessing the novelty of research ideas, and by offering suggestions of new concepts and workflows with unexpected features for new scientific discovery. Dr Inventor is an attempt to understand the potential of technology in the scientific creative process within current technology limitations. It represents a sound balance between scientific insight into individual scientific creative processes and technical implementation using innovative technologies in information extraction, document summarization, semantics and visual analytics. The outcomes will be integrated into a web-based system that will allow evaluation in a selected research area under real-world settings with carefully designed metrics, benchmarks and baseline for creative performance, leading to tangible measurements on the performance of the technologies in enhancing human creativity and a blueprint for future technologies in computational creativity. Dr Inventor has huge implications for scientific innovation in Europe, as it has the potential to change the way in which scientific research is undertaken. The acceptance of the system by general research communities will open opportunities for many industrial sectors, leading to reinforced leadership of European industry. 01/01/2014 31/03/2017 2600000
