Biography

Erivelton Nepomuceno received his BEng and PhD in Electrical Engineering from UFSJ (2001) and UFMG (2005) respectively. He is an Associate Professor at the Hamilton Institute and Centre for Ocean Energy Research and the Department of Electronic Engineering at Maynooth University. He was a visiting Research Fellow at the Technological Institute of Aeronautics in Brazil (2005), Imperial College London (2013/14), Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University in Russia (2019), and City, University of London (2020/21). Erivelton is a Senior Member of IEEE and the elected Chair-Elect of the IEEE Technical Committee on Nonlinear Circuits and Systems. He is the deputy coordinator of the Technical Committee on System Identification and Data Science for the Brazilian Association of Automatic Control. He served as Deputy EiC of IEEE Latin America Transactions (2019-2023) and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs (2021-2023) and Mathematical Problems in Engineering (2020-2023). He serves as an Associate Editor for 1) Journal of Control, Automation and Electrical Systems; 2) International Journal of Network Dynamics and 3) Nonlinear Science. His research interests include Computer Arithmetic, Chaotic Cryptography, Green Computing, Ocean Energy, Sustainable Circuits and Systems, and System Identification. He has published 93 journal papers, 200 conference papers/book chapters/editorials, and he has reviewed 432 papers for 66 journals.

      Observation about Research Projects

      The research project listed below reflect two different realities. The first two were supported in Ireland. All the other ones have been supported in Brazil, at Federal University of São João del-Rei. Most of grants are similar at their aims and competitiveness. Nevertheless, a different financial support scheme (for instance, scholarship are given to universities not in these projects) in addition to inflation and Brazilian Real fluctuation make the comparison in terms of financial support awarded very difficulty to be made.

      Simultaneous stabilization and wave energy harvesting for a floating offshore wind/wave platform PI Energy from renewable sources in Ireland has expanded by 8.9% in 2020. Nevertheless, Ireland has failed to meet the EU's 2020 renewable energy overall target. The total share of renewable energy was 13.5% against the target of 16%. A potential path to achieve this target is to explore hybrid production of energy.       Greenify your Code! PI The "Greenify your code!" project explores ways to improve the efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of algorithms. The project focuses on the evaluation of polynomial functions and the use of Horner's, Dorn's, and Estrin's schemes to improve computational overhead and reduce latency costs. The aim of the project is to develop scripts that can analyze algorithms and suggest improvements that are based on mathematical concepts and theories. This proof of concept study will explore the potential of polynomial evaluation methods to achieve a more environmentally-friendly computing environment.       Low energy consumption computer simulation Supervisor Public interest in the urgent requirement to decrease global warming and the unprecedented increase in the prices of traditional energy sources have attracted the attention of policy-makers across the world to promote a sustainable use of energy [1]. Net emissions of CO2 have to move towards zero to guarantee a stable global temperature [2], [3]. There is an increasing consensus of significant change of the worldwide energy system which is required for climate change vindication [9]. It is accepted that decarbonising the generation of electricity will play a pivotal role [4]. Recently, data centres and the IT sector has attracted attention to its significant growing in energy demand. It was estimated that the IT sector could be responsible for 20% global CO2 emissions in 2030 [5]. It is quite surprising that computing applications can be of incredible importance to energy transition [6], but as well its energy consumption brings significant concern to many countries. There is a growing attention of the community to investigate methods to promote a sustainable computing [5], [7].       Computational Chaos: Analysis and Application using Computer Arithmetic PI Eduardo N. Lorenz coined the term "computational chaos" to describe the artificial generation of chaotic behavior through the discretization process. The inverse situation has also been investigated, that is, the computational simulation presents a periodic result, but the chaotic one was expected. Recently, this phenomenon has been widely studied as a degradation of chaotic behavior, with direct implications for the generation of pseudo-random numbers and cryptography. By "arithmetic computation", it is understood as the area of knowledge that studies the representation of numbers and the way in which arithmetic operations, and thus all other mathematical functions, are implemented in digital form. Despite enormous progress in recent decades, computational solutions are still observed whose behavior was not expected. In much of the research, this subject is only treated in the context of numerical methods. But recent results corroborate 1990s work that shows qualitatively different results, even with identical initial conditions and numerical methods, but changing the digital system (hardware) or natural interval extensions. This type of situation cannot be explained by the mathematics of non-linear dynamics, nor even by numerical methods. It is thus perceived the need to better understand computational simulation. Instead of a theoretical phenomenon, for a proper understanding, it is necessary to investigate computational simulation as a practical digital electronics experiment. It is in this perspective that the general objective of this project lies in relating arithmetic computation to computational chaos. From this relationship, it is expected to analyze and synthesize digital systems that can contribute to a better understanding of chaos theory, as well as its implications for mathematical modeling, system identification, cryptography, and science and technology. 01/03/2021 28/02/2023 7500

      Computational performance of the Polynomial NARMAX simulation PI The computational performance of the Polynomial NARMAX simulation was studied. Results show that the simulation is able to accurately model nonlinear dynamic systems while maintaining computational efficiency. The simulation's ability to handle complex systems and provide results in real-time makes it a valuable tool for engineers and scientists.
