Absent from an University Scheduled Written Exam
If a student is unable to attend because of illness or family bereavement.
The student should let their Academic Department know in advance if possible and check if there are any forms or procedures that needs to be followed with their Department. There is no need to inform the Exams office. The seat will be kept in the exam hall, so if the situation changes, the student can still attend the exam. The student should keep any medical certificates (sick cert) or other supporting documentation, in case he/she needs to use this later. It may be needed, for example, by the student's Academic Department.

In most cases where there is a University scheduled written exam, there is a supplemental autumn exam. in August. Departments normally indicate on course finder repeat option and information about capping (see below screenshot). ![]() |
Next Steps
In June when your official examination results are issued, information about the supplemental university scheduled written exams will be available on our webpages. This information will include how you register online, to inform us that you wish to take exams and also the applicable fees (due to Fees Office) which apply for supplemental examinations. You may have up to 3 exams in one day. Further information is available here.
Your results in June will reflect your missed exam as follows:
New Marks and Standards | Old Marks and Standards | |
These rules apply to: | All first year, second year , third year students, undergraduate and postgraduate. | Students in year 4 of a 4 year programme in academic year 2017/18. |
What is the difference between absence and not passing? | None, both will be recorded as incomplete/ not-passed. | Absent students will be marked as absent. |
What mark will I get? | You will get zero for the exam component. | You will be marked as absent. |
If you missed your exam, you will get zero for the exam component. When you receive your results in June if you have 'Not Passed/Incomplete' in any module you will need to apply to resit it in august and will be liable for repeat fees. All information will be available on our website in June.
Some students could attend but would find it difficult and might not perform as well as they should. This might arise for example where a student is ill or had a recent bereavement, and therefore might be able to physically attend, but might under-perform.his involves a judgement on the part of the student. A student should not attend an examination if that will put their health or well-being at risk. However if the student can attend the exam it is advisable to do so, because:

What happens if a student does attend and does poorly but passes. | A student may apply to repeat a module which has been passed. This is only allowed in exceptional circumstances, and will require evidence (for example medical certificate or evidence of bereavement). This will be done after the exam, as the student will not know if it is needed until the results are available. |
Repeating modules that have been passed is only allowed in final year, and only up to a maximum of 15 credits. |
↵Some students feel inadequately prepared, and simply wish to delay their exams to the supplemental examinations.
If students seek to delay their exams, this is very inadvisable for a number of reasons:
This is a written examination at the end of the semester scheduled by Maynooth University (via Examinations Office). If a module has a University scheduled written exam this will be indicated as part of the module description on Course Finder. See screen shot below.
For queries on in class tests or any other exam/assessment, please contact the relevant academic department of the module.
