Speaker 1: Gerald Gallagher, Technological University Dublin

Title: "Advanced Methods for CFD and How They can Contribute to a Greener Future"

Abstract: Advanced methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), including GPU-accelerated lattice Boltzmann simulations and machine learning techniques, are driving significant improvements in the field. These approaches allow for more accurate and efficient simulations of complex flows, making it possible to optimise designs and processes more accurately in areas such as energy production, transportation, and bioengineering while also optimising resource use. Incorporating machine learning into CFD can further streamline the design process, for example identifying patterns and making faster predictions that lead to more sustainable simulations. This presentation will discuss these advanced CFD methods along with applications, and it will also demonstrate tools that can be used for assessing simulation resource usage.
Also, he will introduce the CFD Research Group at TU Dublin and the S2: Sustainable Simulation and Simulation for Sustainability EUt+ ESSLab+ Specific Interest Group.

Title: "Simulation for Sustainability Case-Study: CFD Simulation for Wastewater Treatment Systems"

Abstract: Simulation technologies can be used to promote and achieve sustainability goals. Computational Fluid Dynamics has been used for a few years now in the optimization of wastewater treatment systems, but there are still challenges to be overcome. In this presentation we will discuss how can CFD aid in the optimization of wastewater treatment plants, and what are the main challenge in this field.
