Congratulations to the students from our Faculty of Science and Engineering who will be participating in the 2024 Summer Programme for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) this summer. The Summer Programme for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) is a paid experiential learning program centered on active research. It is designed for successful undergraduate students who are interested in learning more about the postgraduate experience and potentially pursuing a career in research. The projects will take place over the summer, with students having the option to work full-time for 6 weeks or part-time for 12 weeks.

SPUR provides students with the chance to collaborate closely with Faculty Mentors on research projects spanning various disciplines. This offers an academically enriching environment and exposes students to a wide array of learning and research opportunities, thereby boosting their confidence and knowledge in their respective disciplines. In addition to a Faculty Mentor, students will also have access to a SPUR Mentor throughout the program. SPUR Mentors are current PhD students at Maynooth University who serve as an additional resource, offering support and advice from a peer perspective, whether virtually or in person over a coffee.

Participating in a SPUR project offers numerous benefits. In addition to gaining networking and professional development skills, students will receive a €1,500 scholarship, be eligible for a Gold Maynooth University Student Experience (MUSE) Award, and have their SPUR project recognized on their transcript – an excellent way to enhance their employability and distinguish themselves from their peers.

Best of luck to all the students and mentors. We are looking forward to seeing your projects and hearing about your experiences. We are extremely proud of our students and want to convey our congratulations to all who have been selected to participate in SPUR. We wish you the best as you embark on this exciting new experience!
