Biography
Carmel Breslin completed her degree in Chemistry and PhD in Physical Chemistry at NUI Galway and then joined the Department of Chemistry at Maynooth University. She also spent a year working at the centre for Advanced Materials at Penn State University and at the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at the University of Southern California. Her research interests are in Electrochemistry and Materials and she is on the Editorial Boards of three peer-reviewed journals, Materials, Corrosion and Materials Degradation and Organic Polymer Material Research (OPMR) and is an elected member of the International Council on Materials Education and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Functional Materials and Chemical Engineering.

We work with various Materials such as conducting polymers, hydrogels, biopolymers, nanoparticles, nanowires, nanofibres, nanodots, electrospun mats, two-dimensional materials, including graphene, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We are particularly interested in forming new materials and are especially interested in exploring their applications. Materials are designed and employed as sensors for biomedical and environmental applications, as adsorbent materials for the removal of pollutants from aquatic systems, as sustainable coatings for corrosion protection and multifunctional electrocatalysts for advanced oxidation processes, and for applications in energy, energy conversion, energy storage, and renewable hydrogen.
Our research work is currently funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Irish Research Council (IRC), Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), and Industry, while past research projects have been funded and supported by SFI, IRC, Health Research Board (HRB), Enterprise Ireland (EI), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), the European Union and Industry. - Claire Harley, Gillian Hendy and Eimear Ryan obtained Endeavour Europe Awards from the Australian government to fund 6-month research placements at the ARC centre of excellence in Electromaterials Science at the University of Wollongong to work with Professor Gordon Wallace and Professor Simon Moulton.
- Sinead McDermott obtained an International Award from the Norwegian Research Council, Norway to fund a 6-month research placement at NTNU with Professor May Britt and Dr. Edel Sheridan at the Department of Chemical Engineering, NTNU, Norway.
- Enrico Andreoli obtained a FAS-Science Challenge Award to fund a 6-month research placement at the University of Texas, USA to fund a collaborative project with Professor Seamus Curran, Department of Physics.
- Conor McCarthy won a Yggdrasil International Award from the Norwegian Research Council, Norway to fund a 6-month research placement with Dr. Edel Sheridan at SINTEF in Norway.
- Lynn Garry obtained an Endeavour Research award to fund a 6-month research visit to work with Professor Justin Gooding at the University of New South Wales, Australia.
- Karen Herdman, Catherine Fox, Adelaide Dura, Eimear Ryan, Anita Hamilton (co-funded with Intel), Gillian Hendy and Claire Harley obtained postgraduate fellowships from the Irish Research Council.
- On completion of her PhD, Gillian Hendy was awarded a FP7-Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship to work on a collaborative research project with Professor Robert Langer at MIT, USA (outgoing host group) and the Electrochemistry/Materials Chemistry research group (return host group).
- David Branagan, Amy Rudd and Edel Sheridan won awards for delivering the best lectures on Physical and Analytical Chemistry at the annual Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium, while Gillian Hendy won the award for the best Young Researcher Lecture presented at the International Conference on Materials, Energy and Design.
