Research Interests

Since completing my PhD in 1995 my research has spanned a number of interrelated domains that can broadly divided into overlapping clusters of projects and publications:

    Software, big data, smart cities
    The Internet and cyberspace
    Cartographic theory, mapping and dashboards
    Data infrastructures and practices
    Spatial theory and geographic methods
The development of the discipline of  Geography
Ireland: social geography, housing, spatial planning
    Diaspora strategies and migration
    Disability issues
Cognitive mapping; relationship between Geography and Psychology

I have been fortunate enough to have (co)written or been the principal investigator on 45 funded research projects, research infrastructure, and research centre/platform awards totalling c.€36 million from a range of funders, including the European Research Council (ERC, EU), Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS, Ireland), Royal Irish Academy (RIA, Ireland), Higher Education Authority (HEA, Ireland), Science Foundation Ireland (SFI, Ireland), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, UK), National Science Foundation (NSF, USA), ESPON (Europe) and the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB, Europe).

Current on-going funded research includes

The Programmable City (2013-2018).  Funded by the European Research Council, €2.31m (ERC-2012-AdG 323636-SOFTCITY); plus a supplemental SFI award of €300K. Project website

Building City Dashboards: Addressing applied and fundamental issues (2016-2020). Funded by Science Foundation Ireland, €2.35m (15/IA/3090).  Co-PIs Chris Brunsdon, Martin Charlton, Co-Is Jeneen Naji and Gavin McArdle.
