BSc Product Design & Innovation graduate (2024) Laney Hyland picked up a coveted IDI Graduate Award for Medical Device Design at the award ceremony held in Belfast School of Art, Ulster University. Her 4th Year Final Major Project beat competition from across Ireland.

The inspiration for this focus area came from her grandmother who has received 3 knee replacement surgeries. Connect is a self-assisted rehabilitation system that offers patients a user-controlled recovery after replacement surgeries. Utilizing interchangeable resistance bands, patients assess and build strength pre-op, and can track progress through a color-coded system post-op. By progressing through the different colours of the bands from light to heavy resistance, patients can build up the routine and build muscle memory pre-op.

This engages patients aiding caregivers in monitoring progress. The design follows many universal design principles for example equitable use: The design allows for all patients to use as they see fit in a safe way.
