Gizem Yardimci, PhD candidate at the School of Law and Criminology, presents at the University of Ljubljana

Gizem Yardimci, a PhD candidate at the School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth  University, presented her research entitled “Protecting Free Elections in the Age of Political Bots: Assessing the AI Act in the Context of the European Convention on Human Rights” at the Global Conference on AI and Human Rights, Ljubljana, Slovenia. This presentation is a reflection of Gizem’s ongoing PhD research project which is funded by the Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI). Gizem is conducting her research project under the SFI Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies (ADVANCE CRT). Gizem focused on the impact of AI, particularly political bots, on free elections, and examined the AI Act and the European Convention on Human Rights. Her work highlighted the need for robust legal frameworks to safeguard democratic processes in the digital age. The findings and discussions from this conference will contribute to a forthcoming volume edited by the Conference Committee, as well as to develop Gizem's research project.

Gizem Yardimci is a PhD candidate at the School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth  University, and also co-supervised from the Department of Sociology. Her PhD project is entitled ‘Can we regulate the use of online manipulative political bots around political elections?: Considering the AI Act and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Her research interests include the intersection of technology, law, and human rights, with a particular focus on the implications of artificial intelligence on democratic processes.
