Join us in welcoming Aisling Murphy, Academica Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics who will kick off the Department of Physics' Seminar Series for 24/25, with her talk on:

"Knots, bows and wiggles: disentangling the shocking secrets of young stellar jets"

Abstract

Jets and outflows are a ubiquitous and often spectacular feature of young stellar systems. These ejection features are closely linked to the processes which form the star and shape the protoplanetary disk, and thus offer a unique window into the formation of the star-disk system.

In this talk I will discuss what jets can tell us about the hidden inner workings of the disk, some of the the complex and dynamic features they exhibit, and how we can combine integral field and broadband spectroscopy to unravel these features in the key inner regions of the jet close to where it is launched.
